Kumayri Historic District

The most intact example of pre-Soviet Armenian urban life in the country — a living architectural museum.
Black Fortress (Sev Berd)
An imposing 19th-century Russian military fortress built from black volcanic stone. The massive walls and towers are remarkably well-preserved and offer excellent views over Gyumri and the Shirak plateau. Now a cultural events venue, free to explore outside.
Surb Nshan Church
The most beautiful church in Gyumri — a 19th-century Armenian Apostolic church built from black tuff with intricate carved facade. Survived the 1988 earthquake while much of the city crumbled. Active place of worship with superb stained glass.
Dzitoghtsyan Museum of Social Life
A remarkable museum of 19th and early 20th-century Gyumri life housed in a restored merchant's house. Period furniture, costumes, photographs, and domestic artefacts reconstruct prosperous Alexandropol before Soviet rule. One of the most evocative small museums in Armenia.
Aslamazyan Sisters House-Museum
The home and studio of celebrated painters Mariam and Yeranuhi Aslamazyan. Filled with vibrant colourful paintings, tapestries, and ceramics — a joyful contrast to the Soviet grey outside. One of the hidden gems of Armenian art, rarely visited.
Vardanantz Square
The central square of Gyumri surrounded by fine black tuff architecture. The Mother Armenia statue, outdoor cafés, and the daily life of Armenia's second city converge here. Evenings fill with locals promenading and enjoying outdoor restaurant terraces.
Harichavank Monastery
A 7th-century monastery 20km east of Gyumri, significantly expanded in the 13th century. Remarkable carved stone khachkars, an intact 13th-century gavit with intricate carved ceiling, and a beautiful mountain valley setting. Very few tourists — a profound and quiet experience.
Marmashen Monastery
A stunning 10th–11th-century monastery complex 10km north of Gyumri in a river valley. Three churches and ancillary structures set among ancient trees beside the Akhuryan River. One of Armenia's finest examples of medieval church architecture. Almost entirely free of tourists.
