Nizwa Fort
The most visited fort in Oman and a masterpiece of Arabian military architecture. The massive round tower (36m diameter) dates from 1668 and houses an extraordinary system of defensive traps, murder holes, and gun emplacements. The views from the top over the palm-fringed old town with the Hajar mountains behind are defining Oman.
Nizwa Friday Souq & Goat Market
The most atmospheric traditional market in Oman — and one of the greatest markets in Arabia. Every Friday morning, the goat market fills with Omani men in white dishdashas conducting livestock auctions by rapid-fire hand gestures. The adjacent silver and copper souq sells traditional Omani jewelry, khanjars, and antiques. Arrive by 08:00.
Bahla Fort & Town
A UNESCO World Heritage Site 40km from Nizwa — the largest fort in Oman and one of the great pre-Islamic fortifications of the Arab world. The 13km mud-brick wall enclosing the entire historic town of Bahla is extraordinary. The fort itself took 30 years to restore and houses a superb museum.
Jabreen Castle
The most exquisitely decorated castle in Oman — a 17th-century fortified palace with superb painted ceilings, intricately carved wooden doors, and cool interior rooms. The most romantic and best-preserved interior of any Omani fort. 60km from Nizwa on the road to Bahla.
Jebel Akhdar (Green Mountain)
The "Green Mountain" rises to 2,980m above Nizwa — a cool mountain plateau with rose gardens, pomegranate orchards, ancient terraced villages, dramatic wadis, and the finest trekking in Oman. The Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort provides access to otherwise restricted areas. Temperature 10–15°C cooler than Muscat.
Falaj Daris
The largest and most celebrated of Oman's ancient falaj irrigation channels — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The falaj system has channelled mountain water to Nizwa's date palms and gardens for over 3,000 years. The public park surrounding the main channel is a tranquil Omani oasis.
Al Hamra & Misfat Al Abriyeen
Two of Oman's finest traditional mud-brick villages, 45km from Nizwa. Al Hamra's 16th-century multi-storey houses are among the best-preserved vernacular architecture in Arabia. Misfat Al Abriyeen, perched above a wadi with extraordinary terraced gardens, is the most beautiful small village in Oman.
Birkat Al Mawz
A small village at the foot of Jebel Akhdar with a beautifully preserved ruined 17th-century palace (Bait Al Rudaydah), ancient falaj channels flowing through date palm plantations, and the start of the mountain road to Jebel Akhdar. One of Oman's most photogenic traditional villages.
